I may not be the right one to tell you this. I am still 20 years old and may not have that experience. But base on my observations and by reading life books, I can tell that we should listen to ourselves more than anybody else. I am still young and doesn’t have that much experience and maybe you too.
When we were young, we don’t know what we want to do. That is why we tend to listen to our parents what they want us to do. Most of our parents may probably send us to school so we can learn something. But with that, they are just like passing us to the teachers to tell us what to do. And because we don’t know what we are passionate about and what we want to do in our entire life, it is too easy to follow what our parents’ want, our teachers’ want, or our entire families’ want.
A perfect example of that is when I was a kid. When I was in my early age [7-15 years old], I follow what everyone I trusted around me wanted me to do. It is because I don’t have the confidence to do what I want. I don’t have enough experience to say that I can be what I wanted to be. And also, what I want during those time is for short-term interests which is not good for my life.
But later on, when I went to college and follow a course, I realize that this is not what I want to do my entire life. I want to do this. I don’t want to be like this and that. Maybe some of you like the course you are following right now which is very good for you. But for me, even though I choose that course because they say I am good at this and that, I found something that really interests me doing in my entire life — something that I can say ‘even when I get old I will still love doing.’
If you also have some realizations that right now, listen to yourself. You should do it right now. You should start doing something to achieve that dream so you won’t regret it when you aged. If the course you are following right now does not lead you to what you want, shift to the right course. Or if there is no course for what you want, stop going to school and explore the world and learn to be who you want to be.
It is your life. It is our individual lives. If we suffer because of our decisions, let it be. At least, we have no one to blame. We have no one to hate but ourselves. But always remember, if you will encounter great failures, do not give up. Experience is the great teacher, and failures give the best lessons. It will make you stand again, stronger and wiser, so don’t quit.
Listen to yourself, more than anyone. You are the only one who knows what you are capable of, what you really want, what you want to be. And most importantly, you are the only one who knows who you really are.
